Most of the South Sudanese population is animist or Christian. Western missionaries evangelized the South Sudanese in the 1800’s, and many nationals converted to Christianity, causing conflict with their northern Islamic, Arabized neighbors. In Niger, the cultural pressure to maintain the Islamic faith continues to hinder outreach efforts, though indigenous pastors, many of whom have converted to Christianity from Islam themselves, are stepping up as leaders in the fledgling church.
